How One Hospital Saves 6,000 Hours Annually by Streamlining Processes

You get it: hospital revenue cycle workflows are complex. From filing claims to collecting payments, minor issues multiplied hundreds and thousands of times over can become major roadblocks. The more efficiently and effectively you can progress through the work cycle, the better service you provide your patients and your facility.

One hospital in Long Island, NY saves 6,000 hours annually by streamlining workflow processes. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital employs 2,500 health professionals, treats more than 12,000 inpatients, and handles approximately 43,000 emergency room cases each year. Workflow automation saves the facility nearly 3.0 staff annually.

Here are three specific ways they use automation to streamline workflow processes:

  • Streamline account management. The Mather team uses EMUETM, a Databound Healthcare Solutions service, to automate patient accounting. The hospital uses EMUE to automatically add coded comments, perform adjustments, and perform transfer balances. If a person manually updates these records, each entry requires nearly two minutes. With automation, the process takes no more than ten minutes to set up and EMUE handles all future updates.
  • Automate data imports. Inputting EHR data is a time-consuming process when done manually. The Mather Hospital team uses a single script to migrate patient files and create non-patient files. By automating this data migration, Mather Hospital reports saving more than 65 hours during each round of testing.
  • Use flexible scripting. Mather uses EMUETM to handle manual processes outside of their Soarian environment. Automation scripts retrieve current information from credit and inventory usage third party services and securely download it directly into Mather’s systems where and when they need it. Mather uses EMUE’s simple scripting tool to complete in-house tasks much faster than previously possible.

The only way providers can meet the growing expectations hospital revenue cycle is by streamlining workflows. Automation helps providers spend less resources on administrative tasks and more time on patient services and care, while still meeting compliance and security regulations.
